Incoming Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth on Thursday briefly praised the company's pharmacy staff, but made no mention of the three-day protest walkouts they held this week over poor working conditions. The walkouts reflect rising dissatisfaction among pharmacy employees, who have complained for years about having to grapple with understaffing and burdensome work expectations imposed by corporate management. The experiences he's had with employees made his decision to join Walgreens "frankly, an easy one," Wentworth added. A Walgreens spokesperson touted the company's pharmacy teams in the statement, noting that they work "tirelessly to serve our communities." Walgreens is engaged and listening to the concerns of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, the spokesperson said.

Lindsay Bira swears by freediving — lengthy stints of underwater diving while holding your breath — as a stress reduction method. When you're stressed at work, practicing a "breath hold" freediving exercise at your desk can help, Bira said on Wednesday at the 2023 NeuroLeadership Institute Summit in New York. It only takes 60 seconds. "You are, physiologically, totally capable" of holding your breath longer than 60 seconds, but your brain starts to send distress signals before you reach the milestone, she added. When you take a second — or 60 seconds — to breath-hold and reframe your thinking in those moments, you're doing something called "reappraisal," Bira said.

Scientists have long thought Earth's inner core is like a huge solid metal ball. It could help explain why Earth's magnetic field is so weird. Jung-Fu Lin / UT Jackson School of GeosciencesThe Earth's inner mush revealedA 2021 study had already started to question the big-iron-ball assumption. Seismic waves, they found, weren't really going through the Earth in a way consistent with a fully solid core. The eye-popping numbers are part of a longer-term shift toward private college housing. Moody's Analytics recently warned of an "affordability crisis" for college students, noting that since 2019, rents for student housing in a sample of notable college towns had grown faster than those of regular apartments. Student housing goes privateThe gold rush in student housing is a relatively new phenomenon. Back in the 1980s and '90s, most college students either lived in bland, cinder-block-walled dorms or in conventional apartments farther from campus. Even with his frugality, he came to realize that the prices in West Campus were "impossible to rationalize" for a college student.

The US officially announced Wednesday it will send Ukraine depleted-uranium tank ammunition. This powerful ammunition gives Kyiv the capability to not only punch holes in Russian armor, but also do additional damage inside enemy vehicles as the fragments potentially ignite. The Pentagon listed the 120 mm depleted-uranium tank ammunition as part of a $175 security assistance package that was officially revealed on Wednesday. The US is not the first NATO member to send Ukraine depleted-uranium ammunition. The latest US security assistance announcement, which includes the depleted-uranium tank rounds, comes ahead of what is expected to be an imminent delivery of 31 Abrams tanks.

There are five key questions for investors looking at the heavily concentrated rally in stocks this year. Though recent commentary points to artificial intelligence as the catalyst for the current tech stock surge, BofA chalks ut up to a few other factors as well. But while that period ended in consolidation and some steep losses for investors, the current tech rally differs in an important way. Today's top seven firms are much bigger than many tech firms in 2000, which signals that they can afford to deal with stiffer regulation. Investors can expect opportunities to broaden beyond the seven mega-cap stocks, and valuations for the equal-weighted S&P will exceed them.

Like last year, much of the 2023 show was focused on showcasing the new push for greater diversity. The James Beard Foundation has been mired in controversy over the past few years. The winner of the South category, Natalia Vallejo, is the first Puerto Rican native to win a James Beard Award. Here’s the full list of the 2023 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards nominees.

Billionaire Ken Griffin's Citadel internship program is attracting more students than ever before. Citadel, the $57 billion hedge fund, and market maker Citadel Securities recruit hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students every year for an 11-week summer internship program. The internship starts Monday, with a kickoff week at the Four Seasons in Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach. "We think of campus recruiting very much the same way that other firms think of executive recruiting," Mitro said. "All of it is geared towards simulating what life would be like for them if they were to join the firm," Mitro said.

An agreement on the United States' debt ceiling doesn't necessarily mean a smooth path to President Joe Biden's desk. Several Wall Street economists agree the deal will likely get signed, but not without some bumps along the way. House Committee on Rules meeting Before the legislation reaches the House for a vote, it must go through the 13-member House Committee on Rules — nine Republicans and four Democrats. "If all three vote against and no Democrat votes in favor, the bill will fail," Hatzius wrote in a Monday note. Tight House vote It's expected to be a tight vote in the House.
Neuroscientists at the University of Texas in Austin have figured out a way to translate scans of brain activity into words using the very same artificial intelligence technology that powers the groundbreaking chatbot ChatGPT. Before entering the fMRI machine, CNN correspondent Donie O'Sullivan was given specialized earphones to listen to an audiobook during his brain scan. While the technology is still in its infancy and shows great promise, the limitations might be a source of relief to some. While the technology at the moment only works in very limited cases, that might not always be the case. “Technology can improve and that could change how well we can decode and change whether decoders require a person’s cooperation.”

A section of the Border Wall is under construction just south of the UT-Brownsville/Texas Southmost College campus next to the Rio Grande River. The 20-foot high concrete and steel wall is being built in sections throughout south Texas. Seven people waiting at a bus stop in a Texas border city were killed and a dozen more were injured early Sunday when a vehicle rammed into them in what investigators believe was an intentional act, officials said. The victims were at a stop located near a Catholic Charities facility in the city of Brownsville when they were struck, a senior law enforcement official told NBC News. One of the injured was airlifted to Valley Baptist Medical Center in nearly Harlingen, the department said.
Scientists say they trained AI to recreate a story from a brain scan. The AI was able to read their brainwaves and recreate the story accurately, per a study. Clearlink CEO James Clarke said remote workers "quietly quit" and didn't open laptops in a month, Vice reported. A representative didn't address the remarks, but said Clarke "could not be more excited" for the company. Clearlink's CEO James Clarke reportedly told employees that he believed many remote workers have "quietly quit" and become so brazen that dozens at his company "didn't even open" their laptops for a month. "And those were all remote employees, including their manager — for a whole month." Clearlink is a private company with 800 employees, a company representative told Insider.
The "State of the Air" report found that nearly 120 million people, more than a third of the population, lived in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution between 2019 and 2021. The report assigned letter grades reflecting the number of days that air quality in a specific area reached unhealthy levels on the Air Quality Index. Exposure to unhealthy levels of ozone air pollution makes breathing difficult for more people across the U.S. than any other single pollutant, the report said. Wildfires in the region were a major factor in the increasing number of days and places with unhealthy levels of particle pollution, the report found. The report used data from air-quality monitors managed by state, local and tribal air pollution control authorities in counties across the country.
Microsoft unveiled new versions of its Bing internet-search engine and Edge browser powered by the newest technology from ChatGPT maker OpenAI. But the biggest one of all may be next, he says, through the combination of artificial intelligence and branches of science involved in medicine. But the opportunity won't translate into achievement without a new form of collaboration between the classic big tech talent and the medical field. One of her portfolio companies, Insitro, was founded by Stanford AI researcher Daphne Koller (Koller co-founder edtech company Coursera). "There is lots of exciting big talent opportunities coming from big tech and big cap pharma," she said.
